St. Nicholas Tossing the Bag of Coins

St. Nicholas & the 9 Coins

We realize that our classes are very reasonably priced, perhaps even below the market rate, but affordability is an important part of our evangelization that enables us to train a greater number of iconographers called to this vocation. Spreading the joy of iconography to many and training iconographers to preserve this ancient liturgical art is more important than charging the going rate to far fewer students. We believe this imbalance can be remedied in the future by seeking institutional grants from organizations that share our mission and desire to preserve this collective cultural heritage of humanity. This is why we are working on a multi-year process of applying for grants, such as capacity building grants that could help the institute expand and grow, while keeping our class prices accessible.

Until the time that we are successful in securing institutional funding, we appreciate the donations of iconography supporters to augment our programs; here is how your gifts make a profound difference for us:

  • Granting a need-based scholarship every term
  • Purchasing specialty teaching supplies – both reusable equipment (higher quality document camera & full spectrum lights) and consumable supplies (like clay boards, saral paper, pigments, and transfer leaf gold)
  • Acquiring institute-owned specialty brushes for painting commissions that will benefit the Institute
  • Paying for teacher demonstration supplies, like their in-class icon board, constructing fabric examples on mannequins, pigments & specialty gilding supplies
  • Helping defray the costs of printing student instruction manuals, monthly graphics software licenses, and zoom subscription

Wish List:

  • Projector & Screen: We are currently borrowing a student’s projector and projection screen for teaching in the classroom and would eventually like to purchase each for the institute.
  • Decorative Display Easel: A generous couple is donating a beautiful, historic icon to the Institute. We need to purchase a high-quality display easel, worthy of being used to safely display this icon at the altar.
  • Professional Convertible/Adjustable Painters’ Easel:  Large enough to handle large scale (heavy) icon boards in vertical or flat orientation for painting commissions.
  • Custom Kiot: In order to display historic icons and safeguard their transport to various locations, we need to have a well-made kiot crafted with non-breakable, museum-quality plexiglass crafted specifically for this icon to safely preserve it.
  • Laminating & Cricut Machine:  For producing in-class materials.
  • Guest Speaker Fee:  We would like to hold an annual event for the community to showcase student work and the Institute’s mission where a guest might give a talk on iconography as a way to build community and bring in new students.
